Woman in 40s dies, South Australia records 2009 new cases

South Australia is considering easing restrictions after recording 2009 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths on Monday, including a woman in her 40s.

South Australia’s new Covid-19 cases has again slightly dropped over the past 24 hours, with Premier Steven Marshall confirming the easing of restrictions will be considered this week.

Premier Marshall also revealed a woman in her 40s and a man in his 70s who were infected with the virus had died.

He said a report would be prepared for the coroner about the woman’s death.

Of Monday’s 2009 new cases, 1465 were recorded from PCR tests and 540 from RAT kits.

Currently, 294 people are hospitalised with 29 people in intensive care and six people on ventilators.

It comes as the state recorded 2062 new cases on Sunday, which was the lowest daily number of new infections for 2022.

The state has shown positive signs it has already reached its Omicron peak after a record 5679 cases were reported on January 14.

Mr Marshall further modelling undertaken by Professor Joshua Ross at Adelaide University will be considered by the Covid — Ready committee this week and will determine “how we may set about easing restrictions in South Australia.

“We can’t remove all restrictions at the same time — that would lead to a second damaging wave in South Australia,” he said.

“We’ll also be looking at elective surgery — not to remove the ban completely, but looking at the pathways back.”

Mr Marshall said it was likely that about 10 per cent of the state’s cases were the Delta variant.

He said he was “delighted” with the state’s vaccination rate, with about 50 per cent of eligible residents now having their booster shot.

The premier also announced the Novavax vaccination should be available in the state from February 21 after it was approved by ATAGI.

There are currently more than 27,000 active cases across the state, down from more than 33,000 yesterday.
