A six-year-old girl was pulled off a fence by a dog before it viciously attacked her near Brisbane in a horrific end to the Easter long weekend.
Laquarna Chapman Palmer, 6, was playing on a fence in Woodridge, around 25km south of Brisbane’s CBD, when a neighbour’s bull mastiff pulled her off.
The dog dragged her into a yard at around 4.30pm where she was mauled by both the neighbour’s mastiffs.
She suffered horrific chest, abdominal and shoulder injuries but remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Laquarna’s uncle, Reece Chapman, heard the screams and rushed to her aid.
Mr Chapman said he heard her screams and ran to the fence.
“She just got pulled off the fence by one of the dogs,” he told Channel 9’s Today.
“I just heard my mother screaming in panic and just ended up jumping the fence to help her and one of the dogs were there going to attack her face, I threw a chair at the dog.
“I thought she was dead, honestly, because she was laying there lifeless.”
The girl suffered horrific chest, shoulder and abdominal injuries and was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.
“One patient has been transported in a serious condition to Queensland Children’s Hospital after a reported dog attack at 4.26pm,” Queensland Ambulance said in a statement.
Mr Chapman also suffered leg injuries during his rescue effort, requiring 10 stitches.
Dog handlers from the council were seen arriving at the scene and removing the dogs.
It is believed both dogs are set to be put down at some point.
Logan City Council said both dogs were unregistered and Queensland Police’s Child Protection Unit has been advised of the incident.
The council has “zero-tolerance of irresponsible animal ownership and high-risk animal behaviour”, according to a statement.
