One new Covid-19 case linked to Goondiwindi while Cairns virus-positive woman travelled to NT

Queensland has recorded a new local case of coronavirus, with health authorities scrambling to identify the source.

Queensland declares Katherine a COVID-19 hotspot

A Covid-19 outbreak in a small town west of Brisbane has grown overnight, with authorities confirming a woman in her 20s has tested positive.

Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the woman is a close contact of a previously identified Goondiwindi case, and has been in home quarantine, however she spent at least a day in the community while infectious.

Authorities are also waiting for more information about a Cairns resident who tested positive to Covid-19 after flying to the Northern Territory.

It is not known yet whether the woman was infectious while in Queensland, or what relation this might have to the NT’s case of community transmission that sent Katherine into a three-day lockdown and Darwin into a lockout.

As of Saturday, 79.06 per cent of Queenslanders aged over 16 have had one dose of the vaccine, while the rate of total vaccination sits at 66.3 per cent.

It comes as Australia reaches a major vaccine milestone, with 80 per cent of adults over the age of 16 now fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

There are nine active cases in Queensland.
