NSW Covid: ‘Previously healthy’ 2yo child dies from the virus in Sydney

A previously healthy two-year-old child has died from Covid in a Sydney hospital as case numbers in NSW continue to ease.

A two-year-old child has died from the coronavirus in Sydney despite previously having a clean bill of health.

NSW Health on Monday announced the toddler – who was among four new Covid-19 deaths – passed away at the The Children’s Hospital at Westmead on Friday from their infection.

“NSW Health asks for the privacy of this child’s family to be respected during this most difficult time,” a spokesperson said.

The child reportedly fell ill last Wednesday.

Children under the age of 5 are not eligible for Covid vaccines.

Of the three adults who died with COVID-19 in the latest reporting period, one was aged in their 70s, one was in their 80s, and one was in their 90s.

All had received two doses of the vaccine.

Sadly, NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of four people with COVID-19 – one child, two women and one man.

Tragically, a previously well two-year-old child from Sydney died at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead due to COVID-19 infection.

There have now been 2047 Covid-19 deaths in New South Wales since the start of the pandemic.

Victoria is the only state with more deaths, having recorded 2675, and combined the two states account for more than 80 per cent of Australia’s total death toll.

Case numbers in New South Wales continue to ease from last week’s spike above 30,000 with Monday’s figures showing another 14,970 positive tests.

Daily Covid cases had been hovering around the 5000 to 12,000 mark since the end of the Omicron wave before surging thanks to what health authorities blamed on a data fluctuation.

Hospital numbers on Monday edged higher to 1163, while there are 34 people in intensive care in New South Wales and 15 people on ventilators.

The youngest person in Australia to die with the virus remains an eight-week old baby who lost their life in the Hunter-New England Health District back in December.
