New modelling shows second wave avoidable as SA records 1147 new cases, five deaths

There have been 1147 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths recorded in South Australia as new modelling reveals the state should avoid a second wave.

South Australia has recorded 1147 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths in the past 24 hours.

Premier Steven Marshall again highlighted the number of people recovering from the virus outweighed the number of infections that were reported each day.

He said Monday’s new cases were “well below” the state’s average of 1372.

The total number of active cases stands at 14,635.

Twenty-four people are hospitalised with 16 in intensive care and five on ventilators.

Mr Marshall also announced $30 dining vouchers for Adelaide CBD venues were up for grabs in a bid to encourage more people to head back to the city.

It comes as new Omicron modelling has revealed South Australia should avoid a second wave.

The data, released by SA Health on Sunday night, shows the state‘s transmission potential could increase between 10 to 30 per cent.

“It can be seen that there is a small rise (or) plateauing in cases (or) infections following each of the school phases of opening,” the Adelaide University modelling notes state.

“Overall, it is estimated that this policy should not result in a second wave of cases.

“Case numbers should mostly continue to decrease, although at a much slower rate than if (some) activity restrictions were to remain in place.”

Mr Marshall said previous modelling had been “remarkably accurate”.

“If you look at the numbers where they were tracking … we were definitely heading for a very large number,’ he said.

“The reason we put those restrictions in place was (because) we needed to change the trajectory and so our hospital system wasn’t overwhelmed.”
