Revellers have braved the rain and cold temperatures to celebrate the 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup Day.

Crowds gathered at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday, showing off their best fashion.

Despite the dreary conditions, punters looked ready for a day in the sun with high heels, strappy dresses and many fascinators.

Many revellers tried to hide their makeup and hair from showers.

The event was very different to last year, when crowds were capped at 10,000 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The race that stops the nation endured its coldest weather in decades with heavy rain and strong winds hammering the city.

The cold snap has brought snow to Victorian Alps and moved south of the border to the Snowy Mountains of southern NSW.

Gold Trip was named the winner of the race, with Emissary coming in second place and High Emocean in third.

But it has not been all fun.
