A driver allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol has ploughed into a traffic controller at a coronavirus testing site in Melbourne.

Leading Senior Constable Adam West said police were called to the Thompson Rd testing clinic at an old retail building in Cranbourne, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 5.30pm on Monday.

He said the driver of a Subaru sedan was asked to move his car forward by one of the traffic controllers when he moved off at speed and struck the controller.

The 32-year-old man’s car continued on, crashing into another car, which set off a chain reaction among the people waiting in line to be tested.

Constable West said the Subaru crashed into the back of a Ford, which crashed into a Nissan, which then crashed into another Ford.

“It’s believed the Subaru then also spun and crashed into a Toyota in an adjacent lane,” he said.

The injured traffic controller, a 22-year-old man from Mooroolbark, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm and other injuries.

Police allege the driver of the Subaru, from Lysterfield South, returned an evidentiary breath test result of .076.

Constable West said police were also waiting the results of a blood test after the man allegedly returned a positive oral fluid test for drugs.

The driver is expected to be charged at a later date with traffic offences.

WorkSafe is also investigating the incident.

The local government area of Casey, which is where the testing site was located, recorded 188 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday and has emerged as one of the infection hotspots in Victoria’s outbreak.
