Newcomb & District captain Andrew Webb has declared one finals contender as the team to beat, with the side stacked with talent.

NEWCOMB & District captain Andrew Webb has declared Guild-St Mary’s as the team to beat in the GCA4 ahead of the season restart today.

Last year’s GCA3 semi-finalists are currently third on the ladder with four wins from six games, only behind Little River and Waurn Ponds-Deakin.

Webb said Guild-St Mary’s had a dominant all-round line up that would help them in the finals.

“Most sides in our league has three or four guys that can win a game for their team, but I think they’re just a side that everyone can do that,” he said.

“They’ve got a lot of guys that can do a lot of damage with the bat and ball, there’s no real standout because on their day anyone can win it for them.

“There’s depth the whole way through, even if you get a couple of them cheaply there’s always one that’ll come in and get a 70 or an 80 and put you under the pump.

“They’ve got a really tight bowling line up as well, so that gives them a bit of an edge because they don’t rely on the same four or five guys to do all the heavy lifting.”

Khasim Pathan is leading the league for runs scored, with the Guild-St Marys batter scoring 305 runs before Christmas.

Anand Choudhary sits fifth with 154 runs, with the pair forming a formidable duo for the contending side.

Webb said his side could contend with his premiership favourites if they make the finals.

“We’re currently fifth, but I think we gave them a real scare when we played them,” he said.

“We had some unlucky things happen when we were batting, but I think they’ll be a bit wary when they face us again.”
