‘Wanted to vomit’: Swimming great Ariarne Titmus’ Uber ride from hell

Aussie golden girl Ariarne Titmus has gone public with a horror experience in an Uber, accusing a driver of disgusting and illegal behaviour.

Retired swimming great Ariarne Titmus has taken to Instagram on Monday to blast a horror experience she endured with an Uber driver.

Titmus shocked the swimming world in October when the 25-year-old announced her immediate retirement from the sport.

The Tassie born star claimed nine long-course world championship medals and another eight at the Olympics, winning four gold, including consecutive 400m freestyle titles at the 2020 and 2024 Games.

She made the surprise decision to retire after coming to the realisation “some things in life … are just a little bit more important to me now than swimming”.

Titmus has remained in the spotlight since her retirement, featuring heavily in this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.

But she was unable to hide her disgust after filming an Uber driver as she was taken to an undisclosed location.

Titmus accused the driver of both horrific and illegal behaviour after using the ride-sharing app.

“My Uber driver today was watching Instagram reels the entire ride home from the airport,” Titmus wrote on an Instagram story that has since been deleted.

“He was constantly burping out loud and I wanted to vomit I felt so carsick.

“One, he’s breaking the law.

“Two, how is he still driving given I rated him 1 star and would expect the same from others?”

Titmus is the current 200m freestyle world record holder and boasts a staggering haul of 33 international medals, including a further eight from the Commonwealth Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are looming large on the horizon, as well as the Los Angeles Olympics two years later.

After taking a break following last year’s Paris Games, Titmus shocked herself in realising her time in the pool was over.

“I never thought Paris would be my last Olympic Games,” Titmus said after her retirement.

“Knowing what I know, I wish I maybe enjoyed that last race a little bit more.

“Having these 12 months away, I’ve really had the chance to explore what life’s like without swimming. That was always my intention.

“I love swimming, I’ve always loved swimming. It’s been my passion since I was a little girl.

“But I’ve taken some time away from the sport and realised some things in my life, that have always been important to me, are just a little bit more important to me now than swimming.”

Titmus also spoke of the emotional fallout that came following surgery to remove a tumour in her ovary prior to Paris.

“It really rocked me, mentally, it probably was the first time where I considered some things outside of swimming.

“I’m excited for what’s next, I’m excited that I now have this opportunity to really delve into life and other things that I’m wanting to chase.”
