A six-year-old boy has been mauled by a dog outside a popular Currumbin eatery on Easter Sunday, leaving a “horrendous” wound.

And the savage attack has left the boy’s father “f***ing irate” over the dog’s owner fleeing the scene.

He is now calling for the dog to be destroyed after council located the pet owner’s contact details on Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 8am on Sunday, Andy Bracek and his son Teddy were walking along Pacific Parade in Currumbin when they stopped for coffee at Tommy’s Italian.

CCTV footage shows the young boy petting a British bulldog before it turned on him and attacked.

Mr Bracek is seen running to his son’s aid and repeatedly kicking the dog away.

Mr Bracek said his son asked to pet the dog, to which the owner reportedly replied “of course you can.”

“At first when the dog jumped up I thought it was playing,” Mr Bracek said.

“But I quickly realised it was attacking Teddy when I heard him screaming. The owner then made a .... half-assed effort to restrain the dog.”

By this point, Mr Bracek says, he was “verbally shouting” and angry at the dog’s owner.

“It seems like the owner had s*** himself and bolted. Being six-foot-two with a broken nose, gold teeth and full of tattoos I think he was scared of me,” he said.

“To be honest in that moment I felt like smashing the dog’s head in.

“But I’m still f***ing irate he didn’t come back to report the incident or give me his contact details.

“If he came back and sorted it everything would’ve been okay but I’m pissed off and disturbed that this man has put his dog’s welfare before a child’s.”

Mr Bracek said while all of the staff at Tommy’s were “extremely helpful” in rushing to the boy’s aid, certain customers and bystanders were “standing around like statues”.

An ambulance rushed to the scene where the boy was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Bracek said his son’s wound was “horrendous” and despite the “horrific attack”, the boy was “brave and in good spirits.”

He said his son required one initial surgery, and would undergo another late Monday night.

“It will definitely require both internal and external stitches. The gash is about five inches long, one inch wide and half an inch deep,” he said.

“It’s especially awful to see on a small child. It takes up a third of his forearm.”

On Tuesday Division 11 Councillor Hermann Vorster said it was “very concerning we’ve heard reports of yet another dog attack on the Gold Coast.”

“This incident highlights the case for the state government to support council’s push for even tougher laws on dog owners,” he said.

“We need the ability to find people whose dogs have been involved in an attack...not just take it out on the animal, but ensure the owner wears some cost.”

Councillor Vorster said he wanted council to look into bringing fines up to three penalty units, or three-fold to $577 for a dog that is not effectively restrained.

In December last year, a single dad was left devastated after his five-year-old son was mauled to death by a dog on Christmas Eve in Varsity Lakes.
