Jobs scoring the biggest pay rises

Words: Rebecca Le May Producer: Grace McKinnon

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed the job sectors receiving the biggest pay rises including one generally low-paying area.

See what the data revealed...

Private sector wage growth occurred across a broad range of industries as businesses looked to retain experienced staff and attract new staff, rising 2.4 per cent annually.

But public sector wages lagged behind with annual growth of 2.1 per cent.

CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman said the 0.7 per cent December quarter rise was the strongest quarterly lift in wages in 7½ years.

Annual wage growth has lifted off record lows of 1.4 per cent in late 2020, with economic activity generally recovering following lockdown-related labour market disruptions.

Public servants – accounting for about 16 per cent of Australia’s workforce – had been restrained by pay freezes and cuts.

Retail trade had the largest quarterly rise of any industry (1.2 per cent), the highest rate for the sector since the 2015 September quarter.

At the other end of the spectrum, the education and training industry recorded the lowest rate of quarterly growth of 0.3 per cent. This was influenced by the expiry of several key enterprise agreements, according to the ABS.

Over the year, the accommodation and the food services industry had the highest rate of growth (3.5 per cent).

This was impacted by the payment of 2020 and 2021 Fair Work Commission annual wage increases in the March and December quarters.

The electricity, gas, water and waste services sector recorded the lowest through-the-year wage growth (1.3 per cent) for the second consecutive quarter.

AMP Capital senior economist Diana Mousina said the tight labour market and rising inflation makes wage growth likely.

Diana Mousina

There is quite a circular relationship between wages growth and inflation. Higher wages growth leads to inflation, but higher inflation also leads to wages growth because businesses and consumers start to price in and demand higher salary rises.
