Path to power: key seats Albanese and Morrison must win

EXPLAINER

For the Prime Minister, it means winning Parramatta, saving Chisholm and avoiding the so-called Teal seats. For Anthony Albanese, the path starts in WA, includes inner city Brisbane and Cairns, and defending the Hunter.

The path to power relies on a few key seats.

Both parties have a  swath of electorates they need to attack, and also defend.

To secure the 76 seats required for a majority government, Labor must gain seven more seats.

The Liberals must pick up one seat to counter a redistribution but will need more to offset expected losses.

NSW has been a focal point on the campaign trail, with the highest number of visits so far.

The battleground

Province outbreak

Morrison has been to the Labor-seat of Parramatta five times in four weeks to chip away the 3.5 per cent margin.

Albanese has visited both NSW seats to help his candidates.

Labor’s campaign bus also rolled into Bennelong, where it hopes to make gains – but does not expect to win. Albanese did two events to sandbag the Hunter, while Mr Morrison has left the attack in this coal mining seat to the Nationals.

Labor’s Lib-seat push

Province outbreak

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has spent significant time in the Hunter Valley, as well as central and north Queensland.

Hunting in the Hunter

Both major party leaders have visited Leichhardt twice, but the far north Queensland Liberal seat on a 4.6 per cent margin is not expected to fall.

Vying for Victoria

Province outbreak

The Liberals are on the defensive in the seat of Chisholm, where Morrison made three visits – compared to Albanese’s two.

While Albanese spent a week in isolation, Morrison almost doubled his events in the state.

Tasmania time

Province outbreak

Northern Tassie has been a focus of Morrison’s campaign, as he vies to hold Braddon and Bass, and pick up Lyons.

Albanese has also held multiple events in the three electorates, with Labor strategists not expecting to lose Lyons.

What about WA?

Province outbreak

Labor had its campaign launch there, leveraging the anger felt towards Morrison during the pandemic.

Both leaders have attended four events each in WA, which poses logistical challenges because of its isolation from other cities.

SA stand off

Province outbreak

SA’s only marginal seat Boothby is a major worry for the Liberals, with Labor confident about the gain.

Albanese is yet to visit the seat, relying on Labor's landslide win in the state election.

But there are fears the damage could be even worse.

Moderate Liberal MPs in seats like Kooyong, Goldstein and Wentworth are facing well-funded independent challengers, but the PM has not campaigned alongside them.

Coalition strategists are hoping only one of the once-safe blue ribbon seats will fall to an independent

The no-go seats

Mr Morrison will likely stay well away from the large cohort of progressive voters who are angry at his responses on climate, integrity and women’s issues.Labor is happy to sit back and watch the independents cause trouble for the Liberals.
