Meet the Balgowlah Heights man parachuting for Australia

Story: JIM O'ROURKE

A northern beaches man, who spends some of his time as an officer in the Army Reserve, has been picked to represent Australia at parachuting.

Cameron Wise will fly out with the Australian Parachute Team in July to the 2022 World Championships in the Czech Republic.

The 38-year-old from Balgowlah Heights was selected after winning the 'accuracy landing' competition at the national championships held at Picton, south of Sydney, in March.

Jumping from about 3000 feet, competitors in the accuracy landing event immediately pull their chutes and fly about 1.5kms to a try and land the heel of their boot as close as they can to a target that's 2cm in diameter, in the middle of an electronic disk, the size of a dinner plate.

When he's not hurling himself out of an aircraft, Wise is volunteering as a patrol member of the Manly Surf Lifesaving Club and a rescue boat operator for the Manly 16ft Skiff Club.

I'm very proud and excited to be representing Australia and the ADF. A lot of people ask me... 'are you an adrenaline junkie?'... I like working with highly competent people and having experiences that most people can't.But I take safety very seriously and that's something the military instilled in me.
