In demand: up to eight clubs to chase clarkson

AFL

As many as eight AFL clubs have already reached out to four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson about his availability next year, reports the Herald Sun.

The legendary Hawks boss is set to be the most in-demand figure in football after taking a year off from coaching following his golden 17-season stint at Waverley.

The report states Clarkson, who has returned from the US after spending time at sporting organisations including the Golden State Warriors, wants to coach again in 2023.

It’s believed Clarkson will wait until July or August to advance his coaching return. He’s then expected to meet with up to three teams that could be perfect fits for next year.

St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt told Fox Footy’s AFL360 that “14 clubs would be silly not to ask the question” of Clarkson, before naming the GWS Giants and Gold Coast Suns as the most likely destinations.

The 14th-placed Suns are the club Clarkson has been consistently linked to, having long battled since entering the AFL in 2012.

The Giants are another clear contender for Clarkson following the club’s 2-6 start to the season as coach Leon Cameron’s nine-year tenure appears likely to end.

The 18th-placed West Coast Eagles have suddenly emerged as a suitor amid the club’s horror season that’s been cruelled by players entering health and safety protocols, and injuries.

Port Adelaide is another logical contender. Despite winning its last three games, the club started  0-5 off the back of consecutive preliminary finals appearances as pressure builds on coach Ken Hinkley.

North Melbourne and Essendon installed new senior coaches in 2021, but with both clubs stumbling this year they’d be silly not to at least ask the question — so too St Kilda.

Of course, heading up the league’s potential 19th license in Tasmania could be the perfect marriage. Clarkson has after all been working on the Tasmanian AFL taskforce.

But Tasmania’s entry into the competition remains up in the air, and if it does happen, it likely wouldn’t be until 2028.
