U2 rock stars Bono and The Edge have praised Ukrainians fighting for their freedom in an emotional 40-minute performance in a Kyiv metro tunnel.

A freedom concert

Bono belted out U2 classics Sunday Bloody Sunday, Desire and With Or Without You. The singer also referenced past conflicts in the band’s native Ireland before 100 people inside the Khreshchatyk station.

The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom. We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon.

The surprise appearance by Bono and The Edge – long time humanitarians – came as air raid sirens echoed in the Ukrainian capital and fighting raged in the country’s east.

Global leaders reassured Volodymyr Zelenskyy that they would continue to provide military and economic assistance to repel Russian attacks.

Currently, the US total spend is over AU$5.4bn.

On May 8, the US dispatched AU$211m worth of weapons to Ukraine.

Biden is pushing for another $20bn in military aid.

There are growing fears Russian President Vladimir Putin could declare all out war with Europe, allowing him to impose martial law. The Russian leader has said the continued supply of weapons to Ukraine by global allies put them at faux war with Russia.
