The wild wombat hike you need on your bucket list

In partnership with

With its gorgeous wombat trail, breathtaking sea views, and an incredible array of wildlife, Maria Island − off the east coast of Tasmania − is a must-visit spot.

The Maria Island Walk is a luxury four-day hike where you can stay in secluded wilderness camps and a heritage-listed cottage. There’s no better place to see the untamed wombats up close.

The native wildlife is ridiculously accessible here. I think that’s why Maria Island feels like my spirit place.

But it’s not just wombats that capture hearts and fill memory cards during the hike. Forester kangaroos, Bennett’s wallabies, and pint-sized pademelons are also heavily featured.

Not to mention sightings of Cape Barren geese, potoroos, bandicoots and echidnas. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see some of the estimated 90 Tasmanian devils, first introduced there in 1971.

The island visit begins with a ferry ride from Triabunna, a sleepy fishing port an hour’s drive northeast of Hobart. After stepping ashore in Shoal Bay, you traipse across a sandy isthmus to Riedle Bay.

Steered inland, six sleeping pods are spaced around a central mess tent. Solar power, tank water, compost toilets and ingenious, open-air bush showers complete each camp’s minimal disruption to nature.

The stay includes meals of Tasmanian scallops with saffron risotto, marinated quail, lamb cutlets, and wallaby and duck sausages and of course, pancake breakfasts. Not to mention the finest Tassie wines.

Aside from the food, there is plenty to see and do during the day, including the hikes to Haunted Bay and the ruins of a convict probation station on Point Lesueur.

There's a swirling natural rock gallery known as the Painted Cliffs, and the windswept peak affording ocean views towards Schouten Island and the Freycinet Peninsula.

Getting there: Access Maria Island by passenger ferry from Triabunna. Visitors require a valid Parks Pass from the Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service.

Staying there: Hiking trips with the Maria Island Walk depart daily from October until April, costing from $2550 a person. Phone the Maria Island National Park office on (03) 6257 1420.
