WU facing end of career after TV show injury

Dual Australian Olympic medallist Melissa Wu may be forced to retire prematurely due to an injury suffered on a reality TV show.

Wu suffered a back injury during filming for the current season of SAS Australia, where celebrities compete in bizarre challenges while being berated by ex-soldiers.

It means the 29-year-old is no sure thing to compete at July’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she is the reigning gold medallist in the 10m individual platform diving.

But Wu may also be unable to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics after claiming bronze in the 10m platform in Tokyo.

Wu said she was managing the injury as best she can after suffering it five months ago.

MELISSA WU

It is a fine line with how much I can push it, so I am taking it day by day. I am not hugely confident that it will get better…

Wu said she had experienced problems with her back in the past, but that it was now flaring up more than usual.

MELISSA WU

The frustrating part is we are treating it the way we have in the past, but it isn’t responding well, so I am not really sure what will happen.

Wu said getting her back right would determine how much longer she could dive for at an elite level.

MELISSA WU

I don’t want to retire based on this, so I am pretty determined to push through it and figure out how I can get it better and good enough to compete.
