queenstown ski season guide 2022

STORY: Sara Mulcahy

New Zealand 's borders are now open to vaccinated Australians, just in time for the 2022 ski season.

Here's what you need to know

QUEENSTOWN

BRISBANE

SYDNEY

MELBOURNE

Queenstown is about a three-hour flight from Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne then a 15-minute drive to the city. To get to the ski fields, hire a car or take the  Remarkables Ski Bus.

GETTING THERE

HIRING GEAR

Every resort has an on-mountain shop where you can hire ski equipment and drop it off at the end of the day. But if you don’t mind carting gear, you’ll save some coin at the shops in town.

WHERE TO STAY

The Rees Hotel has stunning lake views, while the Novotel Queenstown Lakeside is closer to town with family rooms. If budget is no issue, check out the uber-luxe Carlin Hotel.

BEST FOR BEGINNERS

The Remarkables has wide open slopes featuring 30 per cent beginner runs. The ski school takes kids as young as four or buy an adult first-timer package.

BEST FOR SKIERS

Treble Cone is South Island’s largest ski area with 550ha of skiable terrain and the longest vertical rise. It’s known for epic views and challenging steeps. The pick for advanced skiers.

BEST VALUE LIFT PASS

The NZSki pass covers Coronet Peak, the Remarkables and Mt Hutt. More advanced skiers might prefer Treble Cone and Cardrona, which operate on their own two-mountain pass.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS

The world-famous Fergburger is worth the wait, while the flavours at Margo’s Mexican are as vibrant as the wall art. As for bars, check out Whakatipu Brewing and Little Blackwood.

WHAT IF YOU DON'T SKI?

Try jet boating, bungee jumping, paragliding, downhill luge or sky diving, or take  a scenic cruise, hike or visit the wine trails in Queenstown.
