Bold plan to bring heavyweight champ to australia

Boxing

Justis Huni’s promoter Dean Lonergan wants to bring the biggest name in world boxing, Tyson Fury, Down Under within the next two years.

He brought down Manny Pacquiao to take on Aussie Jeff Horn, who shocked the world by taking down the Filipino on home soil in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium.

At the start of a new golden era of Australian boxing, Lonergan believes Huni can assume the mantle of the biggest name amid the arrivals of George Kambosos Jr and Tim Tszyu.

And there’s few better ways to boost Huni’s profile than a bout against one of the world’s most well-known fighters in Australia.

You know you’re filling a 60,000 stadium anywhere in the country. This is where we’re heading. I want to get it done inside two years.

DEAN LONERGAN

What Huni has over the other rising talents in Australian boxing, including Kambosos, is the bragging rights of fighting in the heavyweight division.

Huni will have seven fights in 2022, including three by the end of April. He will next take on Joseph Goodall, who is based in Las Vegas, on February 4.

After that, Lonergan wants to land some big opponents for Huni. As well as Fury, Lonergan would love to organise a bout against Anthony Joshua.

Huni won’t turn 23 until April, but Lonergan says his boxing prodigy is as ambitious as he is talented.

Since he took down former NRL star Paul Gallen in Sydney in June, Huni has slipped somewhat off the radar after recovering from a hand injury.

The 22-year-old has travelled to the US with his father and trainer, Rocky, to turn some heads and remind people of why there has been so much noise about him for the past year.

Justis HUNI

You want to get back out there under the bright lights. But I’m back now and that’s the point of the (US) trip, to let people over there know I’m up and coming.
