 Labor’s 400 COMMUNITY BATTERIES EXPLAINED

it has promised to roll out 400 community batteries across Australia with Narara on the Central Coast suburb identified to be the first one in the region.

If Labor is elected...

So how would it work and what would it mean for your energy bills?

Climate Change and Energy Shadow Minister Chris Bowen says the batteries will let people better store renewable energy  and therefore, cut power bills.

A $200M PLAN

Bowen with Robertson Labor candidate Dr Gordon Reid in Narara.

Mr Bowen, who joined Robertson Labor candidate Dr Gordon Reid to announce the plan, said people with solar panels could store their energy in the community battery, such as when they are at work, then feed off it at night.

Mr Bowen said they had looked at individual areas with high solar uptake and low battery penetration.

WHY NARARA?

"Here in Narara there are 4745 houses with solar panels on their roofs but less than 100 of those houses have a battery at home."

The batteries costs around

HOW WOULD IT WORK?

$500k each

and can be installed at a park or another public space.

They would be run by the network operator. People in the local areas can sign up and pay a couple of dollars a week to participate.

Mr Bowen said savings would differ for each individual with some people recording huge savings and others little depending on their energy use.
