A father travelling with his partner was among two men killed when they were hit by a B-double truck as they wrestled each other on the Pacific Hwy.
The road rage incident was sparked when Stephen Edwards, in his 30s, travelling in an SUV, and another man in a semi-trailer carrying logs had a “minor altercation” about 8pm Monday.
Both vehicles were travelling south when the drivers stopped about 5km south of Woodburn, near Ballina on the state’s north coast.
Witnesses told police the men stopped their vehicles on the incorrect, northbound lanes and began wrestling on the roadway.
A 35-year-old man from Albury is understood to have swerved to miss the two vehicles when he hit Mr Edwards and the other man.
Both men died at the scene and it is understood Mr Edwards’ partner witnessed the horrific incident.
Mr Edwards’ grieving relative Noel Edwards paid tribute to him on social media.
“Rest in Peace to a devoted father, son, brother and friend. We love and miss you forever son,” the post said.
The driver of the truck was taken to Ballina Hospital where he underwent mandatory blood and urine testing.
The highway was closed for almost nine hours.
