Police say a truck driver who was dragged from his vehicle while sleeping and shot twice in the leg in a terrifying robbery is lucky to be alive.
Now, detectives are pleading with the public for assistance to catch the attackers.
Emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway at Mount Lambie near Wallerawang Rd at about 5am on Tuesday after reports a truck driver had been shot.
Paramedics arrived to find the driver, from Western Australian, bleeding profusely with gunshot wounds to his thigh and foot.
Police remain on the hunt for the attackers and are urging anyone who drove through the area between 8pm on Monday and 5am on Tuesday to come forward.
The 42-year-old man told detectives he was sleeping in his vehicle when a group of men stormed the cabin, assaulted him, dragged him out of the truck and shot him twice.
The men took personal items from the truck before fleeing the area in several vehicles.
The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Lithgow Hospital, before being flown to Westmead Hospital for surgery. He remains in a stable condition.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad are investigating the assault under Strike Force Hathern.
Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Robert Critchlow said they were specifically seeking dashcam footage from any vehicles in the area at the time.
He said the nature of the man’s injuries were incredibly serious and his condition could have been much worse.
“The injuries this man sustained from the assault and the shooting were significant and given the location he was left in, he is lucky to be alive,” Det Supt Critchlow said.
