A teenage member of Sydney’s notorious Alameddine family has been shot in what police believe is a targeted attack and a worrying escalation of the city’s gangland violence.

The 17-year-old Alameddine is believed to have shown up to a meeting with someone else in South Granville when he was shot twice — in the chest and shoulder — at about 1.30pm on Sunday.

The teenager was treated at the scene and was then taken to Auburn Hospital, before being rushed into surgery at Westmead Hospital on Sunday night.

His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Police said the Audi was seen leaving the South Granville area after the shooting.

Cumberland Police Chief Inspector Adam Phillips said the shooting was likely linked to organised crime.

“The shooting, we believe, was a targeted shooting … this certainly has the hallmarks of organised crime,” Chief-Insp Phillips said.

“We know (the 17-year-old) was meeting with another person; we ask him to come forward.

“We’re also interested in a white Audi.

“If anyone saw the shooting take place or the Audi leaving (the area) we’d certainly be interested.”

The Alameddines have been the subject of massive police attention in the past month since the assassination of Condell Park father Mejid Hamzy, with police trying to prevent reprisals.

The Hamzys and Alameddines have been long-time rivals of the Sydney underworld and police took the extraordinary step of prohibiting certain members of the families from going near each other in the days after Mr Hamzy’s death.

There is no suggestion anyone from either family was responsible for Sunday’s planned hit or the murder of Mr Hamzy on October 19.

Police taped off Clyde Street between Miller Street and Chiswick Road as forensic investigators began gathering evidence.

Two cars, a Mercedes belonging to the victim and a Mazda hit by a stray bullet, were taken for further examination.
