A 16-year-old girl has died in hospital and her boyfriend remains in a serious condition after the pair were hit by a car in the Southern Highlands on Friday night.
Georgia Galbraith and Ryan Whipp, also 16, were travelling south in a silver Holden Commodore in Mittagong about 10.20pm when the vehicle stopped in lane two of the Old Hume Hwy.
Police sources say there appeared to be an argument involving other passengers in the car at which time the car stopped and Georgia and her boyfriend walked out onto the roadway.
Georgia started walking north, while Ryan stood near the back of the car.
A Toyota Corolla struck Georgia and then Ryan.
Police said Georgia suffered serious head trauma, internal bleeding and ambulance officers performed CPR at the scene before she was flown to Liverpool Hospital.
Her boyfriend suffered a lower leg injury and cuts and abrasions and was taken by road to Liverpool Hospital.
A crime scene was set up while detectives investigated.
All southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed to traffic for more than three hours.
The Toyota driver, a 42-year-old man, was not injured and taken to Bowral Hospital for mandatory testing and has been released pending further inquiries.
Officers from The Hume Police District are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
