A mother of seven who “senselessly, tragically and inexplicably” murdered her friend, stabbing him repeatedly outside a notorious Sydney housing complex, has been jailed until at least 2032.

Long-time drug addict Sharee Turnbull, 41, was on parole in September 2019 when she attacked Jack Mulligan, age 25, from behind in the garbage room of the Johanna O’Dea Court housing complex in Camperdown.

Mr Mulligan was riddled with 18 stab wounds and died in hospital.

Turnbull could not tell the court why she attacked Mr Mulligan that night and on Wednesday Supreme Court Judge Peter Hamill said his life was “senselessly, tragically and inexplicably cut short”.

“There was no evidence of any animosity between Mr Mulligan and Ms Turnbull. Rather the evidence suggests that they were friends or associates. On the night of Mr Mulligan’s death they were socialising together and perhaps looking to find drugs,” Justice Hamill said.

He said he could not conclude Turnbull intended to kill Mr Mulligan but the severity of her attack meant he did not need to.

“This is because of the senselessness of the killing and because of the number of stab wounds. The conclusion that, at the relevant time, Ms Turnbull intended to inflict serious injury upon Mr Mulligan is inevitable,” he said.

He sentenced Ms Turnbull to an 18 years, with a non-parole period of 12 years and six months.

Mr Mulligan’s aunty Carolyn Holder welcomed the sentence.

“No sentence was going to be enough … it was an appropriate outcome, I honestly hope she is able to rehabilitate and able to do something positive for her family,” Ms Holder told The Daily Telegraph.

Turnbull told an earlier sentence hearing she knew how Mr Mulligan’s mother felt because she had also lost a child – an infant shortly after she gave birth when she was 17.

“I feel a lot of pain for her … I know what the pain is like to lose a child,” Turnbull said.

“I regret everything.

“It’s something I have to face because I am responsible.”

Turnbull will be first eligible for parole on June 30, 2032.
