Still attached to lifesaving machines in his intensive care bed, Pyrmont stabbing victim Brett Halcro is now off a respirator and breathing on his own, his family has revealed.

A family member said they have released a confronting photograph to “put you in the room with Brett” as they show their gratitude for the nurses and doctors at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital who have been by his side since he was savagely attacked and his face “carved up”, allegedly by a gang of young thugs.

“Nurses/doctors have gradually lightened Brett’s sedation and he now breathes on his own,” the family member said on the GoFundMe page set up to help with his rehabilitation.

“He has also begun moving his head and body and shows brief responses to verbal cues.

“Brett’s facial injuries (including those to his right eye) are significant, but the surgeons have done a fantastic job and he is healing well.

“Additional injuries to his jaw, arms and hands exist and are being examined and treated.”

Nine teens, including a Barker College schoolboy, have been arrested in connection with the sickening attack on the 36-year-old on July 31.

A court has heard how a number of them gloated about the violence on social media and in vile text messages.

“I am writing this at a distance from Brett but it heartens me to see him being treated with such wonderful care by the nurses and doctors at RPA, Sydney,” the family member said.

The GoFundMe page, which has described his injuries as leaving him “blind, permanently disfigured and facing a lifetime of trauma”, has raised over $50,000.

“I have just spent some time reading through the entire list of donors to date and it has been incredibly heartening,” the family member said on GoFundMe.

“I can’t wait to sit with Brett at some point when he is well enough and do the same — he will be amazed, overwhelmed and filled with love.”

Father-of-one Mr Halcro, 36, was on his way home on a hire bike when he was attacked, allegedly by the gang which includes boys from some of the city’s elite private schools.

Eight of them, aged between 15 and 18, are charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail.

They allegedly stomped on his head.

Court documents revealed one boy allegedly texted a friend saying: “I put the shattered bottle in his stomach and then (another boy) slit his face like 15 times and stabbed him in the eye.

“He stuck it in his eye. Put it in deeper. And swivelled the knife around. So funny.”
