A Sutherland couple will appear in court on Tuesday charged with being part of a syndicate that allegedly sold cannabis-laced lollies, chocolates and cookies via a website.

Scott Francis, 25, and Nicole Colbert, 23, were arrested on Friday morning after police executed a search warrant at a home in Sutherland in Sydney’s southern suburbs.

During a dawn raid on their home in police claim they found nearly nearly 4kg of cannabis-infused food as well as 1.6kg of cannabis, cannabis oil, cash, mobile phones and clothing.

Police allege the pair delivered the cannabis-infused confectionery to users at a number of locations in Sydney’s inner-city between July and August 2020.

They appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday and were formally refused bail and ordered to reappear at Central Local Court on Tuesday.

Police claim they were part of a criminal group which included two french nationals and two Taiwenese nationals.

A covert operation by Kings Cross police began in May this year after they had information that a syndicate was supplying prohibited drugs through a website.

Kings Cross Police Area Commander, Superintendent Paul Carrett, said policing strategies have evolved to target the way people buy and sell drugs.

Cannabis-infused biscuits were part of the illegal foods sold through an online marketplace.

“Online drug supply is certainly not new, but it poses a unique challenge to law enforcement to detect drug transactions,” Supt Carrett said.

“This operation sends a clear message to people who believe they can avoid police detection, that we will continue to target the supply of prohibited drugs using various methods, whether that is online or within the community.

“The sale of drug-infused goods in what looks like unsuspecting food items poses a significant risk to the community.

Also arrested were Mohamed Chennie, 30, at Potts Point and Florian Jean Raymond Sonnet, 31 at Canterbury. Jai-Bao Cheng, 28 and his female companion Ya Chuan, 27 were arrested at Homebush.

All four were charged with multiple counts of supplying prohibited drug and being part of a criminal group. All four were granted bail to appear at Central court later this month.
