Police investigating the drive-by murder of the brother of notorious gangster Bassam Hamzy were back out in force on Tuesday afternoon in a door-to-door blitz at Condell Park.
Underworld figure Mejid Hamzy, 44, died last month after being shot multiple times as he stepped outside his Condell Park townhouse in Simmat Avenue.
Police desperate to avoid a blood feud between the Hamzy family and their bitter rivals the Alameddines moved quickly after the brazen murder to contain the respective family members in their own suburbs.
Criminal Groups Squad investigators from the State Crime Command are conducting a secondary canvass of the area and have again appealed to the community for information and for any dashcam footage from the Condell Park area between 6am and 8am on Monday October 19.
A sweep of the area immediately after the shooting led to the discovery of a pistol under a couch cushion and an unidentified white powder when they checked in on a 25-year-old.
No-one has yet been charged with the Hamzy patriach’s murder.
His brother Bassam Hamzy is one of the country’s most notorious prisoners, locked up in Goulburn’s Supermax for a 1999 murder.
Bassam and Mejid’s mother Lola Hamzy and aunt Maha Hamze have both been shot in attempted murders, and cousin Mahmoud Hamzy was accidentally shot dead by bullets meant for another cousin, Mohammed Hamzy, 35, known as Little Crazy and LC.
After Hamzy’s murder, members of his family and the Alameddines were hit with 22 rarely used Public Safety Orders restricting where they can go. Rafat Alameddine’s Merrylands home was shot up in the days before Hamzy’s death.
There is no suggestion he played any role Mejid Hamzy’s death.
Police believe that in October 2016, Mejid Hamzy was one of the killers of Hamad Assaad, 29, who had the word ‘Executioner’ tattooed across his chest.
Assaad was linked to the attempted murder of Maha Hamze, 44, who was shot in the legs as she stood at the front door of her home at Auburn Rd, Auburn, in 2013.
“As part of ongoing investigations, detectives from the Criminal Groups Squad have returned to Condell Park to conduct further inquiries at Simmat Avenue and surrounding streets from 4pm today (Tuesday),” NSW Police said in a statement.
“A secondary canvass of the area will be conducted, as detectives continue to explore several lines of inquiry relating to the shooting murder.”
