Detectives charge man over alleged serious assault and kidnapping for ransom

A Sydney man was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint from his western suburbs business and held for $4 million ransom, police have revealed today.

Two men stormed a workshop on Links Road, St Mary’s in November where it’s alleged a 36-year-old man was pistol whipped unconscious.

The man was found in a shed on a property for sale. He was found by real estate agents inspecting the property the next day and taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police said despite the similarities it is not linked to the abduction of convicted cocaine smuggler Vahe Geokjian revealed in The Daily Telegraph two weeks ago.

At 6am this morning police raided the home of a 36-year-old Plumpton man who is now being questioned at Mount Druitt police station over his alleged role in the kidnap and extortion.

He will face Mount Druitt Local Court on a string of serious charges including take/detain in company with intent.

In a press conference today, Detective Acting Superintendent Grant Taylor, commander of the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, said police were still hunting for a second man.

Soon after the incident Strike Force Methuen was formed leading to today’s arrest.

Detective acting superintendent Grant Taylor, commander of the Robbery and Serious CrimeSquad, said the money was not paid, and was part of the reason police will allege the man was kidnapped.

He said police are investigating why the man was targeted.

“The reason why he was targeted is the core target of this investigation,” he said.

“We’re trying to determine whether he had any links to the individuals who (allegedly) abducted him, and the motivation behind the actual kidnapping.”

The victim was allegedly snatched from his Links Road, St Mary's business.

Detective Acting Superintendent Taylor said police were still hunting for a second man.

“There were witnesses who saw the abduction take place, and we believe both the individuals who were involved were Pacific Islander in appearance,” he said.

“We’re hoping members of the public may be able to give us some information as to the identity of the second person.

“This is one of the most serious offences, and rest assured there are some very experienced detectives at the Robbery and Serious Crimes squad.”

Police will allege one of the men “pistol whipped” the victim during the assault before the kidnapping.

“The man was found to be bound and unconscious in Shanes Park,” Superintendent Taylor said.

“He was located in a shed by some real-estate agents who attended the property for an inspection. We believe he was tortured in some way and had further injuries inflicted upon him during the 24 hours he was in custody.”
