A convicted sex pest is on the run after he escaped from a Bathurst region jail on Friday afternoon.
Local police are searching the area for 33-year-old Mahmudul Bobbe, who broke out of Kirkconnell Correctional Centre just before 2pm.
He was last seen fleeing into bushland around the prison complex soon afterwards.
It is not yet known how he managed to break out.
Bobbe, originally from Bangladesh, was jailed in April for a minimum three-and-a-half years after he indecently assaulted two female tourists in separate attacks in Wolli Creek and the Royal National Park in August 2018.
NSW District Court heard at the time Bobbe, who met each woman on a couchsurfing app, joined them both for meals and drinks before getting them alone in his car, pinning them to the passenger seat and sexually assaulting them.
Both women managed to escape from the car and report the incident to police, who chased Bobbe down in 40-minute pursuit through Sydney after the second attack.
Bobbe apologised to his victims in court and pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault, taking/detaining with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and driving in a manner dangerous knowing police are in pursuit.
“I assaulted two innocent people, sexually assaulted them,” he told NSW District Court at the time. I’m very sorry that I did it. I never meant, I don’t know why … I’m very shameful and regret every day.”
Police have warned the public to keep an eye out for Bobbe, who is described as being of Indian/Sub Continental appearance with a thin build and dark brown complexion.
He is said to be 170cm tall and weigh 60kg, with a brown beard and shaved head.
He was wearing prison greens at the time of his escape.
Police advise anyone who spots him not to approach him but to ring Triple-0 immediately.
