The brother of the slain “Mr Big” of Sydney’s underbelly who was accused of a gangland shooting four years ago has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
In March 2017 Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad was dramatically arrested at Sydney airport as he stepped off a flight from the Middle East and was charged with Safwan Charbaji’s murder.
Ahmad left for Lebanon days after Charbaji was fatally shot outside his brother’s Condell Park smash repair business in April 2016.
It was the start of a series of gangland executions that have rocked Sydney.
Ahmad’s brother and gang kingpin Walid ‘Wally’ Ahmad was brazenly gunned down at a Bankstown shopping centre two weeks after Charbaji‘s death.
On Friday Ahmad pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the NSW Supreme Court, as prosecutors withdrew his murder charge.
The 37-year-old will face a sentencing hearing on July 24.
Police had alleged Ahmad was one of the men who fired a gun during a heated confrontation outside the A Team Smash Repairs that spilled out onto the street on April 9, 2016.
The violence erupted after members of the notorious Elmir crime family showed up at the smash repair business, run by Ahmad’s brother Walid, to settle a dispute with the family over a $100,000 debt.
Charbaji was driven to Bankstown Hospital by his brother-in-law but died from the bullet wound. Another 35-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot in the face.
