A senior member of a Sydney crime family has been charged by Strike Force Raptor as it steps up its campaign to shut down a bloody war raging between the feuding Hamzy and Alameddine clans.

Ghassan Amoun, the brother of slain Mejid Hamzy and jailed Bassam Hamzy, was arrested on Wednesday by officers from Raptor after he allegedly breached Serious Crime Prevention Orders placed on him by the Supreme Court last December.

Amoun, his cousin Ibrahem Hamze and two Alameddine family members were all subject to strict orders restricting their use of devices and cars and requiring them to report their addresses to police.

In the past six months there have been at least two murders, one attempted murder and several shootings connected to the war between the two groups in Sydney’s southwest.

None of those subject to the prevention orders have been charged in relation to these incidents.

Strike Force Raptor arrested Ghassan Amoun at a home in Auburn on Wednesday. He was charged with two counts of contravene Serious Crime Prevention Order.

“This arrest, and others, is about lawful harassment and in-your-face policing on people who have had these restrictions imposed on them,” Detective Superintendent Jason Weinstein, the new head of Strike Force Raptor said.

He promised there would be more arrests to follow.

Plans to strengthen the gang-busting unit and make it a standalone squad were brought forward to this week when a stray bullet directed at the address of a Hamzy family member nearly hit a nurse in Auburn hospital.

“We will do all in our powers to curtail the activities of those involved in criminal networks who put the community at risk,’’ Supt Weisntein said.

Police will allege Ghassan Amoun was in contravention of his SCPO as he had failed to provide his correct vehicle information and was in possession of multiple mobile devices.

The rarely used Serious Crime Prevention Orders enabled police to restrict or prohibit an enormous array of activities with the purpose of restricting or disrupting involvement by a person in serious crime.

In Amoun’s case there were 72 restrictions, including his use of mobile phones, his bank account details, car registrations and reporting any change of address.

He is not allowed to use other people’s phones or any encrypted devices.

Police will allege in court the 33-year-old contravened his order because he failed to provide his correct vehicle information and was in possession of multiple mobile devices.

He was refused bail on the alleged breaches to appear at Burwood Local Court on Thursday.
