Greenwich car theft: Two men arrested after GPS led police to Beecroft

Police have tracked a stolen car through its high tech GPS before arresting two men and allegedly uncovering a stash of homemade weapons.

A hi-tech car GPS has led police not only to an allegedly stolen Range Rover but a surprise stash of weapons and fraudulent documents in Sydney’s north.

After the luxury vehicle was taken from a Greenwich home sometime between Sunday and Monday, its owners used the car’s tracking system to find the vehicle.

It led them to a home on Bingara Rd, Beecroft where police arrested two men.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury told The Daily Telegraph situations where cars can be tracked remotely will become more common.

The owners of the car used GPS tracking to find it at a home in Beecroft.

“We see how prevalent this technology is across the board in transport. Companies often track traffic volumes based on GPS data. In this instance it has been extremely beneficial to the owner who has been able to track down their car and share this with the police,” he said.

“Technology has changed transport across the board, we have seen that in how we service our NRMA members, and as you can see in these situations it can be used to great effect.”

Land Rover, the producer of Range Rover, said on its website they have developed a remote tracking system for their vehicles.

The system works by using the vehicle’s GPS and syncing this to a smartphone app.

However police allegedly found more than just the stolen car when they searched the Bingara Rd property.

They allegedly uncovered a stash of Medicare and bank documents, a homemade Taser, a mace with nails protruding, a metal pole with razor blades attached and ammunition.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in the driveway and charged with goods in custody (x2), and enter vehicle without consent.

Police will allege in court that during a search of his pockets they found a key to the stolen Range Rover.

The 36-year-old man was arrested inside the home and charged with goods in custody (x2) possess prohibited weapon (x3), possess ammunition and breach weapons prohibition order.

Both men were taken to Ryde Police Station where bail was refused and they are expected to face Burwood Local Court today.
