A young man was fatally stabbed in the upper torso in Jesmond yesterday afternoon after an altercation with another man who then fled the scene.

A man was fatally stabbed in the chest in the Hunter Region yesterday afternoon.
At about 3:45pm on Thursday, emergency services attended a scene on Michael St in Jesmond where a 34-year-old was found with a stab wound to his upper torso.
Officers attached to the Newcastle City Police District allege they were told that the man visited the residence and was injured during an altercation with another male occupant who then fled.
Paramedics treated the 34-year-old at the scene before taking him to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man passed away in hospital.
Detectives have launched an investigation surrounding the circumstances of his death and are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.
A handful a yellow cones with letters were dotted along a concrete pavement outside a house in the neighbourhood as police searched nearby residences for evidence.
Next to the cones, clothing was strewn across the front lawn and driveway with an overturned grocery trolley.
A large-scale search is underway to locate the male occupant who fled the scene.
