A man has been arrested almost a day after a woman was found dead in an acid-filled bathtub at a uni in Sydney’s west.
Emergency services were called to the apartment on Pennant Hills Rd, North Parramatta, around 4.30pm on Sunday following reports of a domestic incident.
Officers from Parramatta Police Area Command arrived to find the body of a woman in her 20s inside the unit.
It is understood the woman’s body was found inside a bathtub and acid was found at the scene, with hazmat crews and NSW Fire and Rescue called in to assist.
Parramatta Police Area Commander Superintendent Julie Boon said a family member of the woman alerted police to the incident.
“At about 4.30 yesterday a family member raised concern about the welfare of the person living inside the unit,” she said.
It is understood a man had earlier called a family member and said he had a fight with the woman.
Police later released a photo of man seen with scratches on his arms and face driving a tipper truck.
The tip-truck the man was last seen driving was seized by police at Bunnings Greenacre just after lunch today.
Supt Boon said police arrived to find the confronting scene.
“The officers forced entry into the unit and inside the bathroom they found the body of a female,” she said.
“I can confirm there were chemicals found inside the bathroom of the unit. I can’t confirm what they were.
“The scene was very challenging for arriving police when they did arrive and found chemicals at the unit they retreated and called other units.”
A 20-year-old man is now in custody after presenting to Bankstown Police Station on Monday. Police say a truck was found in Greenacre and has been seized for examination.
No charges have yet been laid.
Local resident George Hamilton Milner heard a man screaming hours before police made the grim discovery.
“I was in the backyard yesterday at about 2pm and I heard someone who sounded like they were about to sing then it turned into a scream, it was really abrupt then police arrived,” he said.
“We’ve been here for a couple of years and haven’t heard of anything bad so was a bit of a shock to hear it happened across the road.”
A crime scene has been established, with detectives scouring the unit for clues on Monday morning.
Earlier, forensic detectives were seen scouring the scene for evidence and bagged several items for forensic testing, including clothing and aerosol spray bottles. Police also seized a kitten from the unit and cleaned and swabbed what appeared to be blood from its paws.
The woman is yet to be formally identified. Strike Force Jenola has been formed to investigate the incident, with specialist detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
Her cause of death is expected to be known later today.
