A woman will face court accused of waving a burning Israeli flag during a protest in western Sydney.
About 200 people protested in Lakemba on Tuesday night against recent air strikes on the Gaza Strip, which has left 40 dead.
Police allege during the protest a woman holding a burning Israeli flag waved it around as she stopped traffic on The Boulevarde.
She waved the flag, dancing in front of cars until two police officers approached her.
As an officer tried to grab the flag the woman dropped it and ran down the street, weaving between cars.
The two officers chased her, one on her tail and the second trailed behind with the burning flag in his hand.
The second officer noticed embers flying from the flag in his hand, he gave up the chase of the woman and moved off the road to put out the fire.
A NSW Police statement claimed a woman was detained a short time later and was given a move-on direction.
“A large crowd had gathered but remained compliant and dispersed a short time later,” the statement read.
Police investigated the incident and gave the 48-year-old woman a court attendance notice for behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place and wilfully prevent free passage of person and or vehicle.
She is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on July 8.
