A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead in a bath at her North Parramatta apartment.
Meraj Zafar was charged with the murder of 19-year-old Aminah Hayat late Monday night after he presented himself to Bankstown police station.
NSW Police were called to a three-storey unit block on Pennant Hills Road, in North Parramatta, after worried family members raised the alarm.
Police forced their way into the unit’s bathroom where they found the body of a woman in the bathtub.
The young woman was Aminah Hayat, who had only recently moved into the building with Zafar.
“I can confirm there were chemicals found inside the bathroom of the unit. I can’t confirm what they were,“ Parramatta Police Area Commander Superintendent Julie Boon said on Monday.
“The scene was very challenging for arriving police when they did arrive and found chemicals at the unit they retreated and called other units.”
Specialist HAZMAT crews from Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the crime scene.
The 20-year-old Zafar was allegedly captured on CCTV behind the wheel of a tipper truck.
His face appeared impassive, hidden by sunglasses with a dark beard and moustache.
He was arrested and remains in police custody.
Neighbour George Hamilton Milner said “We’ve been here for a couple of years and haven’t heard of anything bad so was a bit of a shock to hear it happened across the road.”
Forensic detectives were seen scouring the scene for evidence and bagged several items for forensic testing, including clothing and aerosol spray bottles.
Police were seen swabbing the paws of the cat found inside the unit.
Zafar will front Bankstown court on Tuesday.
