William Tyrrell: Missing boy’s mum opens up on her feelings towards his carers

Friends are rallying round the biological mother of missing boy William Tyrrell as the police search at the property of his foster grandmother causes new interest in the case.

William Tyrrell’s foster parents have been charged over the alleged assault of another child, as a search for evidence near his late-foster grandmother’s home uncovered two items of interest.

Homicide Squad detectives investigating William’s disappearance charged a 56-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man with common assault after receiving information about the alleged incident at a home on Sydney’s upper north shore.

The charges came as William’s biological mother told The Daily Telegraph that she was a “mess”, but said she was glad detectives had turned their attention to a new person of interest. William’s mother had her son taken from her when he was just a young child and put into foster care.

On September 12, 2014, William was visiting his foster grandmother at Kendall, on the NSW mid north coast.

He disappeared from her home about 10.30am and has not been seen since.

Police this week returned to the home of the foster grandmother – who died in March this year – to commence a new search, seven years on.

On Wednesday, William’s biological mother said her torment began long before her son’s disappearance.

“It’s been years actually. Can you imagine what I’ve been through? I’m a mess, how do you think I’m doing?” she said.

Detectives revealed they had seized a car once owned by William’s foster grandmother.

It is understood one line of inquiry is whether the car was used to move his body, potentially after a fall from the two-storey home’s balcony.

The car, which had since been sold, was seized last week from a Gymea home unrelated to her.

William’s foster mother and foster grandmother were the only two adults home at the time of his disappearance.

All members of William’s foster family have long denied any wrongdoing or involvement in his disappearance.

When asked about revelations of a new suspect on the drawing boards of detectives, William’s mother said she had been concerned about those caring for him “from the start”.

“He had bruises on (him) at a young age when I’d go to visit and they said it was because (he was) learning to walk,’’ she said. “You really think he fell off a balcony?”

The mother has been supported by close friends in recent days as she deals with the return of her son’s disappearance to the headlines.

Outside her home on Wednesday one protective woman stood up for her friend.

“She’s been through enough … she’s the best mother they’ll ever have,” she said.

Police have been working late into the night searching a section of garden beneath a terrace at the Kendall home where William was last seen.

They sprayed polylite on the grass and soil in the hope it would show up traces of blood.

The AFP joined in the search as police begin to look through a creek bed.

At one point a small piece of what was thought to be material was discovered in soil and compared to a red and blue Spider-Man suit, leading to premature suggestions of a breakthrough. But police confirmed they did not believe the find was of any significance.

William’s foster parents are due to face Hornsby Local Court on November 23.
