Fire engulfs rural NSW pub

Shocking footage has captured an “iconic” pub, formerly owned by one of Sydney’s most prominent lawyers, engulfed in flames, leaving the venue completely destroyed.

Emergency services were called to the Royal Hotel Gurley on the Newell Hwy in Gurley, south of Moree, about 8.25pm on Thursday after reports of a fire.

Rural Fire Service crews extinguished the blaze, however the hotel was destroyed.

No injuries were reported and police later established a crime scene.

The Royal Hotel Gurley was in the family of high-profile lawyer Paul McGirr for “four generations”, however, it was sold “some years ago”.

He told The Daily Telegraph it was “sad to see it go” as it was an iconic pub in the region.

Mr McGirr’s uncle Greg was a jackaroo out at Gurley station which the pub was named after.

“That’s where he learnt to drink as a young man,” he added.“The town was founded around Gurley Station (it’s a) very big property ... and the pub used to service the jackaroos in the area, including Greg.”

Having only just spoken to him on the phone, Mr McGirr said his uncle was “devastated”.

“It was a very popular and famous little pub in the area,” he said.

NSW Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A Facebook video showed the pub engulfed in flames, with fire crews battling the blaze.

One user, who posted the video, wrote “end of era” with another replying, “Iconic old pub … such history … gone”.
