An investigation has been launched into how police officers failed to find a gun, ammunition and drugs that were allegedly hidden in a man’s undies while he was in a police cell.
It was not until David Huynh was taken to jail that a search by Corrective Services NSW found the items.
Huynh had initially been arrested at 11.30pm last Saturday after a police pursuit in Kembla Grange that led to him being arrested and taken back to Wollongong Police Station.
Once back at the station he was put in a holding cell before being charged with not stopping for police and speeding at more than 45km/h above the speed limit.
In a statement, NSW Police said that: “Following his arrest, and prior to being charged, police conducted a search of the man”.
Huynh was then placed into the custody of Corrective Services NSW, resulting in him being searched again by prison officers.
It was during that search that the gun, bullets and drugs were allegedly found stashed in his underpants.
Huynh was subsequently rearrested and charged with possessing a loaded firearm in a public place, possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing ammunition without a licence or permit, two counts of resist law enforcement officer in execution of duty, possess prohibited drug, and supply prohibited drug.
He was refused bail and appeared at Wollongong Local Court on Monday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on Wednesday, August 9.
NSW Police said they had launched an internal investigation into how the gun, bullets and drugs had been missed by officers during their initial search.
“An internal review is underway into the police investigation and the processes undertaken while the man was in police custody,” the statement read.
