Violent brawl erupts in Fairfield

A man who allegedly pulled out a knife during a violent brawl outside his Fairfield home has been granted bail, with the court hearing that alleged threats and a spitting incident led to the brawl.

Mohamad Jasem Aldobi, 42, and Mohamad Al Abrash, 21, appeared at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday via audio visual link, both charged with affray and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Al Abrash pleaded not guilty to his charges while Aldobi is yet to enter a plea.

They are the third and fourth men charged over the brawl, after their co-accuseds Ahmad Abrach and Khalid Al-Halabi were granted bail on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the court was told Aldobi and Abrach, two former friends, allegedly met up with each other at the Fairfield Shopping Centre carpark where a verbal argument broke out between them.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Franks said following the argument, Abrach allegedly picked up his son Al Abrash and a woman before driving to Aldobi’s Fairfield home.

It is alleged Aldobi and his co-accused friend Al-Halabi arrived at his home to find Abrach, Al Abrash and the others already waiting for them.

Aldobi’s defence lawyer Brigitte Simeonides told the court Abrach’s son Al Abrash allegedly pushed Aldobi in the chest, sparking a punch-up where bricks were allegedly thrown – one striking Aldobi in the head.

Sgt Franks said Aldobi ran inside his house, retrieving a 30cm kitchen knife which Al-Halabi allegedly confiscated after intervening.

Ms Simeonides said her client had sustained several injuries including a laceration to the head, knocked out teeth and injuries to his lower leg.

Sgt Franks told the court, in an interview with police officers, Al Abrash claimed the brawl began after Aldobi allegedly spat at his father and threatened his family.

Al Abrash allegedly told police he had “the right” to defend himself and his father, Sgt Franks said.

The court was told neither men have a criminal history in Australia.

Magistrate Michael Ong refused Al Abrash bail saying the risk of interfering with witnesses could not be mitigated considering his father is a co-accused and Al Abrash lives at home.

However Magistrate Ong granted Aldobi strict conditional bail, noting his “situation was different” as the primary complainant.

Aldobi must reside at his Fairfield home, report to Fairfield Police Station every Monday and not contact any witnesses or people involved in the alleged incident.

Their matters were adjourned to March 19.

EARLIER: FOUR MEN CHARGED

Four men have been charged after a violent brawl in Fairfield where bricks and wooden sticks were allegedly used as weapons.

Ahmad Abrach, 53, and Khalid Al-Halabi, 38, appeared at Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday via audio visual link, both charged with one count of affray.

Abrach was also charged with one count of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence. They are yet to enter pleas on their charges.

After their court appearance, police charged a further two men – aged 21 and 42 – in connection with the brawl.

Emergency services were called to a house on Rosina St in Fairfield just after 5.15pm on Monday, following reports of a brawl.

Paramedics treated the 21-year-old and 42-year-old men at the scene before transporting them to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

Footage obtained by The Daily Telegraph shows a young man in a black shirt appearing to run into a group of people in Fairfield and launching an object that hits another man in the head.

He is followed by another male in a white jumper, who throws an item in the same direction before chasing an older man onto the road and throwing something else at him.

On Tuesday, police alleged during the brawl Abrach and two others then grabbed bricks from a nearby construction site and allegedly threw them at Al-Halabi and his friend, with one person allegedly beating Al-Halabi’s friend on the head with a stick.

Part of the altercation was captured on video.

Abrach and Al-Halabi, both represented by Legal Aid lawyer Vanessa Zahra, applied for bail.

Ms Zahra, principal solicitor at Zahra Law, said Abrach was a former teacher and refugee from Syria who came to Australia in 2022.

She said Abrach was also the primary carer for his 26-year-old disabled son.

Ms Zahra said Al-Halabi, a refugee from Jordan, also migrated to Australia recently with his family and currently suffered from health issues.

Neither man has any criminal record, onshore or overseas.

Magistrate Rana Daher granted both men strict conditional bail, including requirements that they must not contact each other or any witnesses, report daily to their local police station, forfeit travel documents, and not approach any international point of departure.

Their matters were adjourned to March 18 at Fairfield Local Court, where they are expected to enter pleas.

The two latest accused men – the 21-year-old and 42-year-old – remain in custody and will appear before Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
