Teenagers charged after alleged gay-hate attack in Sydney CBD

Two teens have been charged with assaulting a group of people in Sydney’s CBD in what police are treating as a gay-hate crime linked to another alleged assault in Waterloo.

Two teenagers have been charged with assaulting a group of people in Sydney’s CBD in what police are treating as gay-hate crimes.

Police say a man, 19, and two women, 20 and 21, were approached by the teens in a black Volkswagen Golf on Castlereagh St in Haymarket on February 6.

It will be alleged that one of four people inside the car threatened the man before a male passenger got out of the car and punched the 19-year-old in the head, knocking him to the ground.

When the 20-year-old woman tried to intervene, she allegedly had an egg thrown at her chest while the injured man continued to be kicked on the ground.

The incident was reported to police who launched an investigation and later searched two homes in Bankstown and Greenacre four days later.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested - the younger was charged with two counts of affray, assault causing actual bodily harm in company and common assault while the older boy was charged with affray, assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault and driver not disclose identity of passenger as required.

The 16-year-old was charged with two counts of affray, assault causing actual bodily harm in company and common assault.

They were both given strict conditional bail to appear in court next month.

Police will allege the incident is linked to another alleged assault where a 24-year-old man was threatened and egged at Waterloo earlier on the same day.

The man was hit in the eye and chest and suffered bruising and swelling to his face.
