A magistrate has warned a teenager who allegedly knifed a 17-year-old boy at a carpark in Sydney’s northwest he could face a murder charge if the complainant’s injuries worsen.

The alleged victim is being treated in hospital after he was stabbed just before 10pm after a dispute erupted on Frensham Place, Dural, sending emergency services racing to the scene.

Paramedics found the 17-year-old boy with a stab wound to his stomach.

Police allege the male had been stabbed at a carpark on Allen Way before running from the scene towards Frensham Place.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Hours later about 2.45am, police arrested a 16-year-old boy at a home in the region and charged him with affray.

It is not yet known what sparked the alleged confrontation but both teenagers are known to one another.

The 16-year-old was refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Friday, where his parents and grandmother were present.

The court heard the stabbing occurred during a prearranged fight.

Police prosecutor Nathan Kitchen opposed bail and told the court the boy was at risk of committing further offences and endangering the community.

“This is a very serious allegation resulting in a serious injury to the complainant,’’ he said.

The teen’s lawyer said her client had high mental health needs with ADHD, autism, anxiety depression and was in regular contact with a psychiatrist.

She said he was on an NDIS plan and “none of his needs” could be met in custody.

“This is his first offence,’’ she said.

“He is scared, as he should be, and he understands the seriousness of this allegation.’’

She said he enjoyed school and had a part time job.

The court heard the extent of the boy’s injuries were unknown.

Magistrate Robert Munro said the charges were in their infancy and depended on the complainant’s injuries.

“If he dies, you get a very different charge – you will get a murder charge,’’ he told the defendant.

The court heard the boy had strong community support and Mr Munro granted bail.

The result prompted the boy’s emotional mother to breathe a sigh of relief and say “thank you” before she left the courtroom and wept.

Under the boy’s bail conditions, he must not leave his home between 10pm and 6am except with a parent and is not to contact witnesses.

He was also told to continue taking medication and attending psychiatric appointments.

Mr Munro said the court process could take 18 months. The matter will return to court on Tuesday.
