A teenage P-plater says he “blacked out” when he allegedly ran over a Sydney father in front of his toddler son, in what police have described as a “violent road rage rampage”.

Adam Hamdan is accused of running over a 34-year-old man and fleeing the scene after allegedly “driving aggressively” behind him just moments earlier, and of throwing a water bottle at his car.

Having only been licensed since 2022, a court on Saturday heard that his traffic record was “terrible”, as he had racked up six speeding offences in less than two years.

The 19-year-old spent Friday night behind bars, after he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, not give particulars to police, not give particulars to injured person and cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent.

Hamdan was travelling down the Cumberland Hwy at Fairfield West on Thursday night, when police allege he started driving aggressively behind the 34-year-old and his toddler.

In response, the alleged victim pulled over near the intersection of the Cumberland Hwy and Hamilton Rd and turned on his hazard lights, fearful of the 19-year-old, court documents alleged.

Hamdan pulled over 100m in front, court documents stated, before the 34-year-old got out of the car with a torch and began walking toward Hamdan’s car.

Hamdan told police he believed the man was holding a baseball bat, and then “blacked out”, unable to remember what followed.

Police allege, however, he ran over the man in front of his two-year-old son, who sat in his safety seat, leaving the father on the side of the road with serious leg injuries.

Witnesses called paramedics and the father was rushed to hospital for his injuries.

Hamdan allegedly drove off, before allegedly presenting himself to Granville Police Station the following day, after police appealed for information about the incident.

In court on Saturday, police prosecutor Sergeant Gates told the court Hamdan was a risk to the community, due to his “violent” and “unprovoked” alleged behaviour.

“This was an unprovoked act of violence that was completely irrational to the situation,” she said.

“The complainant is thankfully alive … but this was a violent rampage in a vehicle.”

She said it was made worse by the fact the alleged victim’s two-and-a-half-year-old son witnessed the incident.

In response, Hamdan’s barrister Tom Hughes, instructed by lawyer Abdul Saddik, said if the alleged victim was afraid, his decision to get out of the car and approach Hamdan was “questionable”.

“It is inconsistent with fear,” he said. “If he were afraid, a safe place would be inside the car, with his doors locked.”

As Mr Hughes argued for the 19-year-old’s release to bail, his father sat in the back of the court praying, as his mother sobbed.

While the magistrate said it was “highly likely” Hamdan would face jail if found guilty of the offences, he agreed to grant him bail, ordering the 19-year-old stay far away from any motor vehicle.

“You are not to get in the car,” he said. “If you do, you will end up back here very quickly.”

He was also ordered to report to police three times per week, not to leave NSW and to stay far away from any international departure point.
