Hunter shooting: Police say man, 25, targeted and gunned down in Heddon Greta

Police have said they believe the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man near Cessnock overnight was a targeted attack. A strike force has been set up to investigate.

The fatal shooting of a young man in the Hunter Region is believed to be a targeted attack, police have said.

A strike force has been set up to investigate the incident which left a 25-year-old man dead outside his home near Cessnock overnight.

Shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports of a man being shot at a property on Traders Way in Heddon Greta – about 20km east of Cessnock.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man, but he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

It is believed the victim was shot once in the house. Five other adults and two children were also inside at the time, police said.

Detectives under Strike Force Roslyn have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

In another shooting incident a few hours earlier in the state’s south, a 39-year-old man rocked up to Deniliquin Hospital with a gunshot wound in his right foot.

Officers from Murray River Police District arrived shortly after to conduct inquiries, which led to a crime scene being established at Hussey Ln and MacAuley St in Deniliquin.

The scene will be examined by specialist officers later on Wednesday.

The incident is believed to be targeted.
