Sydney charity maven arrested, refused bail

Sydney socialite Vanessa Jacobs Fennell has spotted for the first time since her eventful weekend.

The 54-year-old charity donor and board member paced the balcony of her eastern suburbs home on Monday, as news spread the mother-of-two had been charged with assaulting a police officer.

Jacobs Fennell is accused of slapping an officer who had just arrested her after she allegedly drove with a positive blood alcohol limit, and sideswiped a car, in Bellevue Hill.

Police allege they were called to Riddell St at about 7pm after witnesses saw the driver of an SUV acting “disoriented” and erratic, after allegedly crashing into a parked car.

“The driver of the SUV … was subject to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result, and was arrested for the purposes of a breath analysis,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Following the arrest, the woman allegedly assaulted a police officer. She was taken to Waverley Police Station where she was charged with refuse to submit to breath analysis, assault Police in execution of duty and not give particulars to owner of damaged property”.

Jacobs Fennell, who spent Friday night in a police holding cell until she got bail a day later, told The Daily Telegraph she suffered a panic attack which prevented her undergoing the breath analysis.

She also claimed she had no idea she had allegedly hit a parked vehicle.

“I accidentally clipped a rear view mirror of a car unknowingly,” she said on Sunday.

There was no sign of Jacobs Fennell’s damaged Range Rover sport at her beachside home. Witnesses to the alleged Friday night antics said the car had extensive damage to one side as well as shredded tyres.

Jacobs Fennell has hired high-profile lawyer Bryan Wrench to represent her when she faces court on April 1. Her drivers licence has been suspended.
