Search for man as 100 number plates stolen in just four hours in Brighton Le Sands theft frenzy

Police have released a CCTV image of a man as they probe a stealing frenzy in Brighton-Le-Sands which saw licence plates removed from parked cars, with residents claiming Service NSW is billing them to fix the damage to their own cars.

Sydneysiders in the suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands woke up to find over 100 cars with their number plates stolen in a brazen licence plate hit last Sunday.

The crime took place between 1am and 5am on March 12.

Targeted streets included Bay, O’Neill, Bay, Princess, Bruce and Gordon Streets, Crawford and Teralba Roads, Brighton andMoate Avenues.

Bruce St resident Wahid Siddique was shocked to find that all three of his cars were damaged.

“They tried the number plates on all of my cars,” Mr Siddique said.

“The next morning when we woke up I saw that my number plate was hanging by a thread.”

“They couldn’t steal my plates but they wouldn’t come off so they were just damaged.”

Another resident on Bruce St said plates that weren’t stolen were left badly damaged.

“They reckon one guy did over 300 number plates all together, whether they were completely stolen or badly damaged,” he said.

“It happened to one of our cars a while ago, maybe last year, but I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Another homeowner on Bruce St also said it was just one man behind the crime.

“Our camera showed only one person doing this, not a group,” he said.

“But you can’t see his face.

“My car was bent but I had to fix it otherwise I couldn’t use the car.”

Another neighbour said Service NSW were still charging the victims for plate replacement despite someone else being at fault.

“It still costs 120 bucks to fix so I just straightened it out myself,” he said.

St George Police have released a CCTV image of a man who might be able to assist with their inquiries.
