Police are on the hunt for up to 10 people they think were involved in a bloody brawl that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man on Thursday night.
Ghassan Mohammed, described by friends as a “really good kid”, suffered multiple stab wounds during the violent fight that broke out just before 10pm at Leonard Reserve in Roselands on Thursday.
Paramedics attempted to revive the 24-year-old, but he tragically died at the scene.
His body remained at the scene for most of Friday morning, as police from Strike Force Poton investigated who was involved in the brawl, and how it began.
A trail of blood could be seen leading from the children’s playground and basketball courts on Friday, as police canvassed homes and potential witnesses in the area.
Superintendent Sheridan Waldau, Campsie Police Area Commander, said the scene was “highly emotive” on Thursday night, as Mr Mohammed’s family and friends arrived to find him dead.
“It’s very shocking, it’s a tragic event,” she said.
“We have a 24-year-old very young man who is deceased. It obviously has major impacts on his family and friends, and we want to know the reasons why this happened.”
Supt Waldau said it believed three to four men ran from the scene following the incident, leaving a trail of blood on Chapel St and nearby Myers St.
“We know that there were a number of people there at the time,” she said.
“We know that they know what happened and the reasons that it happened and we’re appealing for those people to come forward.”
It’s believed the initial brawl broke out between up to 12 people from two groups, however Supt Waldau said it was not believed to be gang related.
“We do not believe it’s a random attack,” he said.
“We believe these two groups may have been known to each other.
Police say the crime rate at Leonard Reserve is very low and was a “shock” to both locals and investigators.
“It’s a family park … we have no crime normally at that area,” Supt Waldau said.
“It’s very shocking, it’s a tragic event.”
One woman on Facebook said she had witnessed the scene.
“I heard a fight and a man scream out ‘help, no stop!’ and that was it,” she wrote.
“There was a blanket or body bag looked like at the basketball court.”
Police are calling on anyone with information about this incident to contact Campsie Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
