A convicted murderer tried to cut off another inmate’s head with two jail shivs made of razor blades after hearing him “bragging” about his crimes.

Using shivs created with razors, paddle pop sticks tied and masking tape, Ricky McNamara tried to behead fellow inmate Aaron McCurley in the yard at Long Bay jail on April 18 — after learning McCurley was on remand for child sex offences.

McNamara pleaded guilty to wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder this week, after he admitted to guards that he had tried to kill McCurley.

While the inmates sat in the yard about 12pm, McNamara pulled McCurley into a choke hold from behind, before pushing him to the ground and slicing his throat with two shivs.

He quickly threw the shivs on the roof and walked off, while McCurley held his bloody throat and called for help, court documents revealed.

“Chief, I’ve been attacked,” he told one of the guards.

McCurley was rushed to the clinic, where staff asked if he knew why he’d been attacked.

“Probably because he found out about my crime,” he replied.

“He tried to cut my head off”.

McCurley was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital once the extent of his injury was established — where he underwent exploratory surgery and closure of the neck laceration.

Back at Long Bay, McNamara — who was serving a sentence for murder — was quick to admit he was the one behind the attack.

“I attacked him, choked him and tried to cut his head off,” he told a guard.

“He was talking about his crimes in the yard, about kids, I was abused as a kid, and I won’t stand for that.”

McNamara was taken to Maroubra police station, where he admitted he had intended to kill McCurley and was shocked he had survived the brutal attack.

When asked whether he would do it again, McNamara “oh, I’d kill him, I’ll cut off his head,

yeah. For sure,” court documents read.

NcNamara, who has been transferred to another prison, will face sentencing in the NSW District Court next year.
