NSW’s most dangerous domestic violence offenders arrested

A NSW prison guard has become the first alleged domestic violence offender ordered to wear an ankle monitor while on bail – as part of a major crackdown on coward attacks.

The man, who cannot legally be identified, will be monitored non-stop after he was granted bail following serious allegations of domestic violence against a former partner – including claims of violent sexual assault.

The guard is facing a raft of serious charges, including sexual intercourse without consent, and aggravated sex assault-inflict actual bodily harm.

He was arrested by police on Thursday and faced court on Friday, where a magistrate in the state’s far west granted the man bail, and as a condition ordered he wear an ankle monitor, which will allow Corrective Services to monitor him at all times.

The bail condition made the guard the first alleged domestic violence offender to be fitted with the device, the same day significant reforms to bail laws were introduced to curb the high rates of DV in NSW.

From this week, alleged serious domestic violence offenders who are granted bail will be monitored using GPS technology.

The tracking will involve Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) watching the movements of alleged offenders against any geographic bail conditions that were imposed by the court.

Prior to the go-live date on Friday, CSNSW deployed electronic monitoring anklets to Community Corrections and court cell locations around the state – ready for the new laws.

“Corrective Services NSW has the specialist knowledge and robust systems in place to help successfully expand existing electronic monitoring of offenders on parole or subject to community corrections orders to those on bail,” Corrections Minister Anoulack Chanthivong said on Friday.

“This intense monitoring shows alleged domestic violence offenders how serious the government is about preventing domestic violence on all fronts.”

The prison officer has been suspended from his position at a NSW prison and will next appear before the court in November.
